RETHINKING THE RURAL IN ANCIENT MAYA STUDIES

Abstract This Special Section provides a glimpse into the vitality of rural investigations in Maya area by presenting recent archaeological research and interpretive perspectives on ancient Maya. introduction serves to contextualize articles this within outside academic discourse practice. I start reviewing common ways which people places are essentialized, underscore that these now unpopular ideas continue implicitly pervade priorities, definitions, interpretations. then provide brief historical summary some its significant contributions our current understandings peoples. Finally, drawing from studies, argue for greater theorization rurality—including how it was constituted, experienced, perhaps even perceived past, relationship periurban, conurban, urban life, continued existence transformation spaces lifeways increasingly urbanized societies. aims invigorate further theoretical elaboration with regard rurality elicit archaeologists place themselves their work broader cultural trends is addressed.
